Boycott Israeli Apartheid! Boycott the Jerusalem Quartet!

Posted by Kathy at Tue, 03/11/2009 - 1:26pm

In line with the Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions, including the cultural boycott advocated by the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel, Justice for Palestine is holding a peaceful protest outside the concert of the Jerusalem Quartet. We will hand out information to the concert audience and feature a performance by our own "Free Jerusalem Street Orchestra".

The Australian tour of the Jerusalem Quartet is supported financially and promoted by the Israeli government. The Quartet is considered in Israel as being a cultural international ambassador for the country. Israeli performers who accept funding from their government for overseas tours are contracted to “…promote the policy interests of the State of Israel via culture and art, including contributing to creating a positive image for Israel.”

By representing Israel in this way, the Quartet, in effect, promotes the policies of the Israeli government. The Jerusalem Quartet legitimise racism, sanctify genocide and mask the reality of apartheid Israel.

Across the world people of conscience are rejecting anti-Arab racism and Zionist mythology and seeing Israel for what it is – a genocidal state which deserves to be ostracised just as South Africa was ostracised during the apartheid era. As part of this growing movement, we call for the cancellation of the Jerusalem Quartet’s concerts in Australia which are sponsored by Musica Viva.
